By Katilyn Thomas

Learn More about Kevin Pizarro

With his fun energy and kindness, we’ve picked Kevin Pizarro, WIN’s Community Resource Specialist, to be featured in this month’s Employee Spotlight. Learn about Kevin’s unique story, accomplishments, and the invaluable role he plays in our organization.

What three things do you think of the most each day?

A moment that always sticks out to me is meeting Dolores Huerta at Santa Monica College during a college tour. She was doing individual meet-and-greets with college students, and we were allowed to get in line. I opened up to Dolores about starting the Gay Straight Alliance in my high school. She gave me such words of encouragement about community building, staying true to my mission, and other personal advice. I took a photo with her but I lost it, so I always have this memory with me.

What is your favorite memory from high school or college?

I love when I see our community come to our events and get everything that they need! It’s extra special when they come and hug me, or even just say thank you! I enjoy seeing the smiles on their faces and their children’s faces light up. This has been one of the most rewarding jobs I’ve had! When I can serve the communities and see that over 150 people show up rain or shine — that’s the best feeling. It warms my heart to know that WIN has done a JOB WELL DONE and we WIN again!

What is something about you that most of your coworkers don’t know?

Something that most people don’t know about me is that I have recently developed a passion for photography. However, not with a digital camera, but with 35mm film cameras. I love getting a roll of film and going out on hikes, social settings, family gatherings, etc., and taking photos. Eventually, when I get the film developed, it was nothing like what I expected. There is a warmth to the film that isn’t achievable with digital cameras. I recommend everyone just buy a disposable camera and just notice the difference when they are capturing memories.

If you were stuck on a desert island – what are your must-have playlists/albums or movies/tv show series?

If, by some chance, I were stuck on a deserted island, I would have a disco/pop-themed playlist to keep me company. It would include divas like Donna Summer, Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Madonna, Kylie Minogue, and Robyn. A song that I can listen to over and over again and never get tired of is “PURE/HONEY” by Beyoncé. It has been on repeat since it was released last year. The pure energy of this playlist would motivate me to keep pushing forward until I get off the island.
